Government records are multifarious in nature. All government records are public records in the United States and honoring the democratic institutions, they are available to public viewing. But the government has to maintain both the rights of the people to look at government records and infer how it is functioning and how the elected representative are accounting for their actions, and also maintain the privacy of individuals.

Why is that? Government Records contain all documents, papers, in print and online, photos, newsreels, films and all other documents that have been created in all the years that the US government has been functioning. It is an account for the public not only to judge the government’s functioning but also the decisions taken by elected representatives during moments of national crisis. The public gets to know how laws came into being and how new laws were implemented and old ones changed.

It is difficult for the average US citizen to get to know about the goings on if he or she does not have archived records to refer to. Decisions, elementary as well as critical were taken by the US government many times in their long years and centuries of functioning. People have the right to know and assess on their own how, those they had been electing to power all these years, were doing while they were in office.

At the same time all government records are not about only what the government was doing. It contains information of the public and like law abiding citizens; all Americans are required to disclose their personal information to the government which also figures in government records.

Information like the most important events in their lives, are all found in all the government records. Beginning with the birth, marriage, driving license, citizenship and all information of events that the individual has gone through all along are documented. Here, personal information like name, contact numbers and social security numbers of an individual US citizen are found in government records.

Recently there have been many issues over the invasion of privacy of individuals if personal information and critical identity numbers were disclosed. Naturally, it was incumbent on the government to also protect the privacy of individuals when allowing them the right to information. That was close and lawmakers assured people that systems would be put in place so that critical personal information could not be tampered with.

All government records are available to public viewing and they are vital when information like criminal cases or court orders is sought. Employees require to do background checks and home owners have to scan the past records of tenants they plan to let their house out to. All government records contain information about crime and statistics including fact sheets which also help small businessmen to check out prospective partner in advance before they get duped.
