In this two part video I will explain how to get records from your local, county or state government agency. The video may be a little long but I tried to explain it down to a basic level for better understanding. My guess is you found yourself at this video because the government wronged you in some fashion. I went through a similar situation and that is why I created this video in hopes that it will help someone else.
Perhaps you will get lucky and the agency will give you all the information you request but this has not been my experience, so you need to know how all this works. Remember I am not an attorney so I can not answer questions. I made this video as a citizens guide. Please comment if you find it helpful and perhaps in the future I can make another video.

There is no easy way to access any nationwide government website for criminal records and court documents even in these days of technological progress. Still there are many gaps in specific state level legislation to implement the constitutional guarantee provided to every US citizen to access criminal records and court documents. Usually criminal records become vital treasure troves of information for employers when they hire people for critical jobs where trust is a main factor.

Small and big businessmen are known to check out their prospective business partners before embarking on a relationship. Earlier you had to spend time at the government agencies and the police departments, fill up many forms to get some information. It was tedious and involved a lot of useless paperwork. 

Free check is allowed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons on their website as an inmate locator service. Public interest organizations like the Family Watch Dog keeps record of all sex offenders that are released from prison. Separate data bases for criminal records and court documents can be found from the police department in their records, from correctional facilities and court records. But for searching, the identity and name of the person has to be verified. Many states also require the person’s social security number and date of birth before a proper verification process can begin.

Employers a required by law to inform their employees that their records would be subjected to a criminal verification check and the applicant should have access to the results of verification. Free criminal records and court document search online is not only difficult to perform but very time consuming as well. From the vast pool of government criminal records and court documents, it is a big task looking for information on the person you want.

Government criminal records and court documents are not provided free by the government agencies or accredited government providers. They sometimes charge a hefty fee for allowing you to search their databases. Many online sites offer free service but to think of the mammoth task of gathering all the information and keeping them updated, one wonders whether proper information will be available as the record keeping involves high costs. Fee based services are always valuable and offer updated information.

Fees for criminal records and court documents are based on the extent of research you are looking for and also on the scale their data is recorded and on the quality of their database. Database searches are as organized by the state and it is better to try the state database if the person hails from that state. Others have nationwide databases to solve your problem. Quality public information is always available for a smart fee.

Law enforcement agencies in the United States compile and update criminal records in local, state and federal levels known as the government inmate records in a bid to present a comprehensive criminal history. With trust levels as low as never before, government inmate records are a tool for identification, employment in critical areas, background checks, security clearance, immigration, criminal prosecuting and developing cases against suspects during an ongoing investigation. 

Government inmate records are maintained at all levels from the sheriff’s office to police departments in their own data bases. Information is shared across various departments for better management of law enforcement and is sometimes made available to the public. Usually the government inmate records make available information on registered sex offenders and in many federal states, the Department of Correctional services make available information through the print media or the internet.

Only records of juvenile offenders are exempt from the dissemination list. Government inmate records may not be available in some cases if the adult inmates use the option of non-disclosure through record sealing. Some states have information collected from various municipal and county courts within the state and their accuracy depends on the state’s supervision of the data uploading from local courts. But usually the information available from the repository may be incomplete or even risky.

Government inmate records contain extensive criminal histories and in effect the agency is a central repository for all other agencies as they send in their data. Barring a few exceptions, records are not divulged to the private sector. Among the central agencies, the National Crime information Center is one such database and is said to hold pretty accurate information. Government inmate records have become very important in these days when a virtual war on terror is being fought for some years now.

Several online sites provide updated information on county jails, State Department of Corrections facilities and many public records. There are jail inmate search tools and prison inmate locators. Free search is available at public record sites for most wanted criminals and fugitives, FBI most wanted, sex offender registry, criminal databases and free public court records.  
Government inmate records are maintained by the FBI which has its own national criminal database managed through the NCIC.

Information is also available on felons or who have served more than one year of jail term for serious crimes they committed like murder, rape or grand larceny. An individual’s criminal identification, arrest and conviction known as Interstate Identification Index or triple-I for short are compiled by the FBI. Government inmate records compiled by the federal agencies can be accessed under the Freedom of Information Act and the Privacy Act. But only records of individuals, living or deceased can be accessed only if they have given you permission.
